Our story

Shri Shankar Lal (Our Inspiration)
Shri Naresh Kumar (Founder)

Since its inception in 1975, Shankar Tea Company founded by Naresh Kumar under the name Shankar Lal Naresh Kumar in the lively town of Haldwani, Uttarakhand has become synonymous with rich, flavourful tea that warms households across the region. Shankar Tea Company, fondly known as "Shankar Chai Karkhana Bazaar wale" is a cherished tea brand that has been a part of Kumaon’s culture. Shankar tea is sourced from the verdant plantations of Assam and West Bengal, ensuring a robust and aromatic experience in every cup. In its early years, Shankar Tea was sold in modest, hand-packed paper packets, a testament to its humble beginnings. Despite this simplicity, the quality of the tea quickly built a loyal customer base, making Shankar Tea a household name. The philosophy of the company, famously expressed by its founder Shankar Lal, is straightforward: “Sell the tea that you also enjoy.” This enduring commitment to quality remains the foundation of the brand’s enduring success.

Our journey

Shri Prafulla Gupta (Properiter)

As demand grew, so did the company. In 2000, Shankar Tea Company embraced modernity by introducing automatic packaging machines, ensuring consistency and meeting the increasing needs of its expanding customer base. This was also the time when the brand adopted a more sophisticated look with attractive branding, giving it a premium appeal.

By 2002, the next generation stepped in, with Shankar Lal's grandson, Prafulla Gupta, taking on the role of proprietor. His entry into the business marked a period of rapid growth and innovation. In 2007, the brand took another significant step by registering its logo, safeguarding its identity in a competitive market and counter duplicity.

Shankar Tea Company didn't just survive but thrived, building a robust distribution network that allowed it to compete fiercely with larger, more established brands. The brand’s reputation only grew stronger over the years, cementing its place in the region's tea culture.

In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Shankar Tea Company launched its Elaichi Masala and Gold variants, designed to boost immunity and confidence among its customers. This timely innovation highlighted the brand's commitment to catering to the evolving needs of its consumers.

Our Present

Today, Shankar Tea is not only a retail success but has also expanded into the wholesale market, ensuring its distinctive blends reach even more tea lovers. Their CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) tea—a blend of Assam and West Bengal’s Dooars Tea—features a harmonious mix of first Flush, second Flush, and third (Autumn) Flush Tea, creating a rich and flavourful experience in every cup. Its legacy speaks volumes, and its packaging and blending processes remain a testament to its dedication to quality. Shankar Tea Company continues to be a cherished name, synonymous with trust and tradition in the Kumaon region.
